Keihin Carolina System Technology Receives Top Environmental Honor

North Carolina Manufacturer Named Environmental Steward by NC DENR

Tarboro, N.C. (June 4, 2014) – Keihin Carolina System Technology (KCST), an electronics manufacturer based in Tarboro, NC, was named a North Carolina Environmental Steward by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The Environmental Steward recognition is the top honor in the state’s Environmental Stewardship Initiative program.

John Skvarla, Secretary of NC DENR presented the award to KCST’s plant manager, David Catt, during a ceremony at the company’s Tarboro facility.

“We are honored to be recognized as an Environmental Steward alongside some of the most premier organizations in North Carolina,” said Catt. “We are committed to making a difference for our associates and the community, but also in our supply chain and for other manufacturers in the state. This award is shared with all Keihin associates for their commitment to conserving natural resources.”

The state’s Environmental Stewardship Initiative is a voluntary program designed to promote and encourage superior environmental performancebeyond what is required by regulation. As an Environmental Steward, KCST commits to reporting annually on its environmental performance.

An external advisory board appointed by the Secretary recommended recognition of KCST primarily due to the company’s achievement of Zero Waste to Landfill, reduction of energy use by 67% since 2010, community engagement, partnerships with Edgecombe Community College and the local high school, and demonstrated industry leadership.

n addition to this recognition, KCST has achieved ISO 50001, an energy management standard, ISO 14001, an environmental management standard, and TS 16949, a quality management standard. The plant has also been recognized as a Green Factory by Honda and recently hosted an environmental symposium on greenhouse gas reduction for Honda and its suppliers.

KCST has focused on environmental responsibility for many years. In 2011, the company launched its formal sustainability program, Sustainable Keihin. The program is managed by a sustainability team that oversees company-wide goals and initiatives, including measuring and lowering greenhouse gas emissions from facility operations. This award is a significant recognition of the many steps KCST has taken to pursue its environmental sustainability goals.
